Pen Pal Safety Tips

Writing to incarcerated individuals can be a meaningful and life-changing experience — but safety always comes first. Here are important guidelines to protect both you and the person you’re writing to:

Protect Your Personal Information

  • Use a P.O. Box instead of your home address (recommended).
  • Don’t share financial information, bank details, credit cards, or online accounts.
  • Don’t share sensitive information about children, family members, or your routine.

Set Clear Boundaries

  • You are not obligated to send money.
  • If someone pressures you for gifts, ask for loans, or manipulates you — end the communication immediately.
  • You decide the pace and type of conversation.

Communicate Respectfully

  • Avoid topics that can get them in trouble inside (contraband, violence, escape, drugs).
  • Don’t discuss gang activity or facility operations.

Verify Information When Needed

  • Remember that some details may be emotional, incomplete, or misunderstood.
  • If something sounds concerning, take a moment before responding.

Report Suspicious Behavior

  • If a profile violates rules, contact the site admin.
  • Never send money to third parties or strangers.

Pen pal connections can be safe, positive, and incredibly meaningful as long as both sides follow simple, common-sense boundaries.
