Hi my name is Rodney Ragbirsingh,
After 17 years of incarceration, I have come to deeply value the things in life that can only be shared with another person. Isolation and loneliness have taught me humility, patience, resilience, and the quiet strength that comes from enduring hardship. While prison has taught me how to survive, life is about much more than survival. I long for the meaningful connections and experiences that this environment cannot provide.
I enjoy reading, weightlifting, listening to music, and writing poetry. Yet words on a page are much more like photographs, they capture only a single moment in time and can never fully express the depth of a persons heart. They allow me to reflect on cherished memories of the past, when I was fortunate enough to experience the love and companionship of another. Music nourishes my spirit, but even the most beautiful melodies are only temporary comforts when there is no one to share them with.
I realize that a person doesn’t have to be behind prison walls to experience loneliness. Sometimes the strongest barriers are the invisible ones we build around our hearts. Although incarceration has shaped part of my journey, it has not defined who I am. Instead, I have chosen to use this time to grow, learn, and prepare for a better future.
Education has become one of my greatest accomplishments. I am on track to earn my bachelors degree through Bard College, and my goal is to continue my education by pursuing a masters degree. With only a few more years remaining before my release, I look towards the future with hope, optimism, and a genuine desire to build meaningful friendships with people who value honesty, growth, and second chances.
